AOL Shield, a web browser that’s based on Google Chrome, promises to keep you safe while browsing the web by: protecting against scam or phishing websites; using anti-keylogging technology to prevent hackers from seeing what you type; and preventing malware from taking pictures of your monitor when you’re typing in sensitive information.

The system requirements for running AOL Shield are: Intel Pentium 4 processor or better, at least 512MB of RAM, at least 350MB of free storage space, Windows 7 SP1 or newer (including Windows 10). A simple setup wizard will help you install AOL Shield on a PC that meets these system requirements. You may need to restart your PC once the installation process completes.

The first time you run AOL Shield, it will ask you to pick a default web browser and then it will open a Welcome page which presents the browser’s main security features (anti-keylogging protection, screen capture protection, anti-phishing alerts) and explains that AOL Shield supports Chrome apps and extensions.

If you’re familiar with Google Chrome, you will immediately feel at home with AOL Shield. Since AOL Shield is based on Chrome, it has the same minimalist interface, the same New Tab page, the same Incognito Browsing window, and the same Settings menu. So to sum it up, you could say that using AOL Shield is just like using Google Chrome – you have the same convenience, speed, and functionality.

Since this browser is made by AOL, the default home page is set to AOL.com and the default search is set to AOL.com. A quick dip in the Settings menu can alter this default behavior and you can easily switch the homepage and set the search engine to something else.

AOL Shield is free software.

AOL Shield bundles Chromes speed, convenience and ease of use with security features meant to keep you safe: protection against scam or phishing websites, protection against keyloggers, and protection against screen capture.

Pros

The system requirements for running AOL Shield are quite low. A straightforward wizard will help you install the browser. Since it’s based on Chrome, AOL Shield has the same interface and the same features as Chrome. AOL Shield protects against scam or phishing websites, keyloggers, and malware that wants to capture your sensitive information. AOL Shield is free software.

Cons

AOL Shield’s setup wizard wants you to install Adobe Flash. This is weird, considering that AOL Shield is based on Chrome and Google isn’t just phasing out Flash in favor of HTML5, it is actively blocking Flash.
